- Start by choosing the dimensions of your crossword.
- Next, place letters and black squares, ideally forming a symmetric pattern.
- When squares are flagged with a red border, there is a two letter word. They are not allowed, so another black is needed.
- The design must include at least one letter as a seed for the calculations to develop. However, you can also use one or more seed words.
- If you want a 'hidden message' in the solution, start by placing the message. That will set some black squares and will affect the symettry.
- If you are designing a Codeword then make sure the initial seeds contain the letters, Q, U, V, J, B, K, W, X and Z. It ensures that these low frequency letters are used.
- Check that final solution contains all the letters and redesign and recalculate if necessary.
